HMD - Head Mounted Display
Definition: HMD - An output peripheral that places a small micro display before a user's eye in order for them to perceive an image generated from a computer or video source.
Head Mounted Displays, or HMD, are the primary delivery system through which text, images, maps, schematics, or other information generated by computer, and/or other electronic systems, are delivered to the end-user. While early computer systems were not designed for mobile or portable application, today's multimedia machines are designed for use in many varied environments that require displays that offer full color, high-resolution, small size, and low power consumption.
With the increasing popularity of handheld computers, personal digital assistants, and augmented reality systems the demand for HMD's has been on the rise. Organizations are beginning to recognize that the true path to increased productivity and enhanced working abilities is by bringing the power of the computer directly to ever more challenging environments. Offering the abilities of operation in extreme temperatures and in small form factors, while providing high-resolution full color images that required minimum power, these new displays made utilizing an HMG are an affordable, effective option.
By the end of the 20th century, the prevailing technologies were CRT, AMEL, and low-resolution LCDs. While workable, these display technologies were limited by high power consumption, low-resolution, large electronics packages, and limited operating conditions. With the dawn of this century, new technologies such as high-resolution LCD and OLED displays became a reality. Offering the abilities of operation in extreme temperatures and in small form factors, while providing high-resolution full color images that required minimum power, these new displays now made utilizing an HMD an affordable effective option.
Liteye believes in the abilities of these new display technologies. They have focused their talents and energies on development of special patented optics, extremely small electronics packages, and rugged housings that all push the abilities of these displays to their optimum limits of performance. Their new HMD's offer big, full color, high-resolution see-through optics, compact inclusive electronics, minimum power consumption, and effective rugged light weight housings, all for a price far more inexpensive then scanned-beamed displays and other limited technologies.

Applications of Head Mounted Displays and microdisplay solutions
Head mounted displays and microdisplays have become valuable tools in many different industries. Below we have highlighted a couple of the most popular uses at this time.
Wearable Computing and Augmented Reality
Anywhere someone needs to view computer data remotely, HMD's are the answer. Attached to a mobile computer an HMD allows the end-user not only access to their data, but also the ability to have both hands free for other tasks. When utilizing a see-through HMD, like our LE-750, the end-user now has the ability to overlay that computer image over their real view of the work place. This is known as Augmented Reality. This ability can enhance precision, increase productivity, and in some cases improve safety. Some of the industries that can benefit from this type of use are:
- Industrial inspection
- Mechanical and auto repair
- Telemedicine
- Aviation
- GPS navigation
- Surgical procedures
- Battle field tactical support
- Remote vehicle control
Liteye's trained staff are always ready to recommend mobile computer companies and software companies that can build a whole augmented reality or mobile work force solution tailored to your needs. Let our team help you integrate a complete HMD technology solution into your organization.

Liteye's head mounted displays offer vast improvement over other HMD solutions. We utilize state-of-the-art OLED and LCD technologies.
Resolution
Many of the other HMD solutions currently on the market offer only a 320X280 or 640X480 resolution. A liteye SVGA HMD offers 800X600 resolution. When we match our new LE-750 optics with the high resolution OLED display you have a big, bright, full-color, high-resolution image similar to viewing a 17 inch monitor from arms length, and it is see-through.
Color
Unlike the CRT and Scanned-Beamed displays on the market, our HMDs diplay true 32bit color. Why view your computer image in simple greyscale or single color? A Liteye HMD presents the end-user with the same quality color image as they have on the monitor attached to their desktop computer. View maps, schematics, and other multimedia the way they were meant to be seen. When an image of a wire harness shows a green wire, there will be no doubt it is green when viewed on your Liteye HMD.
Power Consumption
When an OLED or LCD display technology is matched with Liteye's cutting edge electronics board, worries about power consumption are no longer your problem. Our products all draw minimum power, in most uses 200mW to 300mW at full on. The efficiency of this design allows our HMDs to operate on 4 AA batteries for well over 40 hours of continuous use. A whole weeks worth of work on one set of batteries.
Operating Environments
Our HMDs are extremely rugged. The characteristics of the new OLED and LCD displays paired with our ruggedized housings create an HMD that can be utilized in vastly different environments all over the globe. With a standard operating temperature from -55c to +80c our HMDs can take a wide range of temperature changes before having to be heated or cooled. Our LE-600 and LE-625 models are constructed to be water proof and tough enough that you can drive a vehicle over them. If there is an extreme location you need to operate in give us a call and let us show you what our HMDs can do.
Cost
Liteye HMDs are far less costly to operate and are lower in price than all other 800X600 HMDs currently on the market (And no other HMD product can match the performance and image of our LE-500). In many cases the price of our HMDs came down rapidly in quantity. With our new electronics and easy to manufacture housings, a Liteye HMD is sometimes as much as half the price of other high-resolution solutions. Ultimately, in mass-production the cost of ownership on a Liteye HMD will be extremely low.
